Having a baby is one of the most important times in your life. We recognize that your experience during this time is one that stays with you forever. To make the birth of your baby as enjoyable and memorable as possible, we offer a variety of pain management options for the thousands of women delivering here each year.

Obstetric anesthesiologists provide pre- and post-operative anesthetic care for patients undergoing:

  • Labor and vaginal delivery
  • Cesarean section
  • Bilateral tubal ligation
  • Cervical cerclage
  • Cesarean hysterectomy
  • Other emergency obstetrical procedures

Obstetric anesthesiologists are available on Labor and Delivery at all times, and are committed to fulfilling the specific needs of each and every patient who require their services.

Personalized pain management choices

Requesting anesthesia to relieve pain during labor is a very personal and individualized decision that only a patient and her physician can make.

The chief of obstetrical anesthesia or a member of his team will see the patient in order to obtain a history, and then help them to make an informed decision regarding anesthesia. The anesthesiologist will take your personal preferences into consideration and then coordinate a pain management plan directly with your obstetrician.

We are committed to making your labor and delivery experience positive. Anything that we can do to assist you with your pain management needs will be done. Our goal is a healthy mother and baby.

Maternal fetal medicine

Maternal fetal medicine specialists care for pregnant women with obstetrical and/or medical complications, as well as normal pregnancies.

Our physicians specialize in caring for women during high-risk pregnancies, as well as for diagnostic ultrasound. Their education includes advanced knowledge in the obstetrical, medical and surgical complications of pregnancy and the effects of their complications on both mother and baby. Our doctors are also trained in the latest diagnostic and treatment methods used in the care of patients with complicated pregnancies.

This service is designed for pregnant women with complex obstetrical and/or medical complications, which affect both mother and baby, such as diabetes, multiple gestations, and advanced maternal age. Our Antepartum Testing Units (ATUs) offer state-of-the-art maternal and fetal testing, including:

Robotic surgery

The Northwell robotic surgery program was one of the first programs to offer the robotic approach to gynecology patients in the Northeast. With participation of urogynecologists, gynecologic oncologists, and general gynecologists, our team of robotic-trained surgeons utilizes the da Vinci™ Surgical System as an alternative to both traditional open surgery and standard laparoscopy. The da Vinci™ Surgical System places the surgeon’s hands at the control of a state-of-the-art surgical platform, enabling the surgeon to perform even the most complex procedures through a minimally invasive approach.

For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci™ Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci™ Surgical System can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.

It is important to know that surgery with da Vinci™ does not place a robot at the controls; your surgeon is controlling every aspect of the surgery with the assistance of the da Vinci™ robotic platform. Many complex gynecologic conditions can now be treated effectively without a big incision using the da Vinci™ robotic surgery system:

  • Endometriosis/adenomyosis
  • Abnormal periods (menorrhagia)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine prolapse/urinary incontinence
  • Gynecologic cancer

Types of robotic procedures include:

  • Myomectomy
  • Hysterectomy
  • Correction of genital prolapse
  • Gynecologic cancer surgery

Female pelvic and reconstructive surgery (Urogynecology)

The Division of Urogynecology: Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery was the first Urogynecology department on Long Island and is one of the largest in New York state. Our goal is to provide comprehensive care for women with pelvic floor disorders through a multidisciplinary approach. The practitioners in the division collaborate with colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, urologists and physical therapists.

Within the division, care is provided by fellowship-trained physicians, fellows, nurse practitioners, medical assistants and clerical support staff. Our fellowship training program is designed to educate the future leaders in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

We are committed to offering each patient a personalized treatment plan. Surgical and nonsurgical treatment options are offered and decisions are made based upon the best treatment modalities in conjunction with the patient’s needs and physician consultation. If surgery is selected, many cases can be performed with minimally invasive techniques, vaginally or laproscopically/robotically, that offer long-lasting results with a quick recovery. Conditions treated include but not limited to:

  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urogenital prolapse
  • Pelvic or bladder pain
  • Overactive bladder
